Drowning in Plastic

Drowning in Plastic
Plastic pollution is a main issue that is happening in the ocean but most people do not recognize its seriousness because they don’t think they are related to it. “Drowning in Plastic”, a sound installation made out of plastic bags and bottles, will allow people to get inside the small plastic space and interact with the plastic around them to feel threatened by this abundant amount of plastic.

My final project’s main goal is to make the viewers feel as if they are the animals in the ocean that are trapped and stuck in the plastics. I created a sound installation made out of plastic bags that is big enough for just one person so that the person will feel threatened by the small enclosed plastic space. When being in the enclosed space, the person inside will be overwhelmed by the plastic and feel as if he or she is “drowning in the plastic”.

For my sound recording edit, I strived to combine a different variation of plastic sounds such as squeezing, crunching, and smashing plastic bottles and plastic bags. By adding a sound of my heavy breathing, I intended to give a feeling of “suffocation” and “danger” imposed by these plastic materials. After recording each sound, I edited a composition where there are different levels of “danger” imposed. As the recording comes to an end, there is a higher tension of the plastics crunching up and heavily breathing sounds which allows the ‘listener’ to feel more threatened and in-danger.

For my final project, I really understood how important it is to build a strong idea as it is the ‘base’ of the project. Because I tend to be impatient with my ideas with projects, this was definitely helpful for me to undergo a process of developing and strengthening my ideas and concept. By focusing on the main theme and idea for the project, I was for sure able to focus my experiments around it. Because I was limited with plastic materials, I couldn’t make a space big enough where the plastic is actually way bigger than the human body, which I think would have been a lot more productive to convey my theme of “drowning in plastic”. However, the process of building ideas and experimenting with different materials and sound was something that I had not tried out before which allowed me to learn a lot from it.
