Chris Sound of Potteries

The idea behind this project is to explore and record the sound of ceramic potteries in varies sizes. Pottery has always been one of my hobbies and I have been consistently practicing and making potteries. During the process of making potteries, I recently discovered that by blowing air into ceramic bottles that have different sizes creates different sound effects. For this project, I made five ceramic bottles in varies sizes, and used them as sound artifacts to experiment and discover the differences in sound between smaller bottles and larger bottles. This experiment is documented using the format of video. The information of the dimension of each bottles and the sound they produce are documented and recorded in the video.
For this project, I used five bottles that I made as sound artifacts to examine the difference in sound by blowing air into bottles in different sizes. These five bottles are wheel thrown and trimmed with stoneware clay. In order to produce a louder and clearer sound effect, these bottles were made with a rounded and circular shape. They are also applied with shiny white glaze and fired twice in a cone 10 kiln, providing the bottles a cream color with a glossy finish. The reason why I chose this color and finish is because it compliments the circular forms of the bottles. Additionally, I want the viewers of this video to focus on the forms and shapes of the bottles rather than the glaze, and this subtle color with a glossy finish provides that effect.
In my sound experiment with potteries, I discovered that when you blow air into larger ceramic bottles, the sound of air traveling in and out of the bottle is more significant and it has a higher pitch. On the other hand, smaller bottles produces a lower and blurrier sound.
Through out this project, I’ve had numerous ideas, but I finally decided to choose this idea because of my interest in pottery. In general, I had a lot of fun making this sound project, especially when I was making these potteries. Personally, I think I’ve been consistently reflecting and making progresses based on my proposal, and I’m satisfied with the outcome of the artifacts and the video. If I’m going to make changes or improvements for this project, I would definitely try to make more bottles and set them as a piece of installation in public spaces so that every one could pick them up and experiment with the sound that they make.
